US Connections

After evaluating many potential sites to locate the US end of the ACE terminations, we have selected two R&E International Exchange Points on the US side: MAN LAN in NYSERNet’s New York City collocation space, and NGIX-East/MAX, operated by the University of Maryland in College Park, MD. Each offers rich connectivity to the research and education network community and secure layer 2 and layer 3 facilities. Sites for future consideration as we add more capacity and diverse landing points are the AMPATH exchange point, operated in Miami by Florida International University; SOX, operated by Georgia Tech; and StarLight, operated by MREN in Chicago. An additional benefit to sites along the East Coast is that they are all interconnected at 10Gbps by the distributed layer 2 exchange AtlanticWave, which touches MAN LAN, NGIX-East/MAX, and AMPATH, and which helps promote robustness and multiple peering opportunities—for example, to Latin America and to other exchanges.

European Connections

GÉANT is well-connected throughout Europe with a high-performance, dark-fiber and DWDM-based network throughout the continent and many well-connected landing points for a transatlantic circuit. The leading candidate sites are London, Paris, Geneva, Frankfurt, or Amsterdam. We will land the first two pairs of circuits at two of them—depending on best circuit prices, services, and availability at time of contract—from which we will access the entire GÉANT footprint, and through it, exchanges like NetherLight, important research sites like CERN, and all of the European national R&E networks. For the sake of illustration, we will assume for the moment the selected sites are London and Frankfurt, with expansion to other GÉANT backbone sites as circuits are added during the term of the project.

One word of caution: While these seem like the best landing sites today, when awards are made and contracts ultimately signed, costs, available technology, and traffic patterns will determine final landing sites.

High Capacity Networking

The ACE Project will deploy a network that brings high capacity to projects in Europe such as the LHC and planned ITER facility, and also to as many other sites in the research community as possible. By connecting to GÉANT in Europe, the project provides extremely high-performance and high-function layer2 and layer3 access to all of the major research networks of Europe.
