Engagement & Training

Science Engagement with IN@IU

The Science Engagement team works to ensure that IN@IU provides not only the networking expertise but also the human expertise to assist researchers in maximizing the benefits of global research and education networks. Our team works closely with scientists, researchers, and educators around the world to understand and improve end-to-end network performance for large-scale, international science projects. The Science Engagement team also builds and maintains relationships and partnerships with research and education networking organizations (campus, national, and regional), funding and administrative bodies, and other stakeholders to promote the use of global research and education networks and to enable new international science and education collaborations.

What we do...

End-to-End Support: We leverage our domestic and international partnerships to provide end-to-end networking support for international collaborative science. See our list of partners here. We work with traditional “big-data” science communities (e.g. astronomy, genomics, high performance computing, biodiversity, climate science, and others), but also focus on supporting lesser-known, smaller projects with increasing international data transfer needs.

Education and Training: We also provide educational opportunities for researchers and IT staff via workshops, webinars, and the creation of training materials.

IN@IU also organizes domain specific workshops that include scientists, campus network staff, and backbone provider staff. These workshops facilitate discussions between scientists and network engineers regarding the characteristics and requirements of their data. Previous workshop involvement from our team include:

  • Operating Innovative Networks (OIN) - The Operating Innovative Networks (OIN) workshop series, funded by the National Science Foundation, equips university and laboratory network engineers with the hands-on knowledge they need to build the next-gen campus data-intensive scientists need to succeed.
  • CrossConnects Bioinformatics Workshop - in collaboration with ESnet.
  • Lower Mekong Initiative Workshop (LMI) - Held August 2014 in Hanoi, Vietnam this workshop brought together scientists in water-related research disciplines and their network support staff from the Lower Mekong region (including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam) with counterparts from United States to raise awareness of and collaborate on responses to the impacts of climate change.
  • perfSONAR - Workshops in collaboration with TransPAC and NEAAR partners to improve network monitoring

Workshops we currently offer and how to get started

We are able to provide trainers and resources for perfSONAR Deployments, Data Transfer Node installations, and other resources through NSF-funded grants NEAAR and TransPAC. Below you will find more information on what we can offer, links to training resources, and previous trainings our group has executed.
